Obesity

Menopause & Perimenopause

Recently, the subject of obesity has received a great deal of attention due to the campaign by the First Lady, Michelle Obama to reduce childhood obesity. Statistically, nearly one-third or 33.8% of adults in the United States today are considered obese and that number has been steadily rising. Obesity is considered an epidemic in the U.S. and other developed countries in the world.

What is considered obese?

Obesity is not the same as being overweight. Obesity is commonly defined according to your BMI or Body Mass Index. BMI is a calculation of your weight to your height. It is a screening tool only and does not measure body fat. If a person's bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. For an adult, if your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, you are considered overweight. If your BMI is 30 or over, you might be considered obese. However, there are also other factors that can effect that designation.

How do I determine my BMI?

Your BMI estimates how much you should weigh based on your height. Here are the steps to calculate it:

  • Multiply your weight in pounds by 703.
  • Divide that answer by your height in inches.
  • Divide that answer by your height in inches again.

Why should we care?

Obesity is the #2 cause of preventable deaths in the US. Also, in 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion. Health risks associated with obesity include type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, respiratory problems, stroke and other ailments.

What causes Obesity?

The simple answer is often too many calories and not enough exercise. Other causes include:

  • Genetics
  • Not enough sleep
  • Endocrine disrupters
  • Medications
  • Medical issues
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Stress

What can you do?

Before beginning any diet or treatment, you should check with your doctor. Changing your eating habits and regular exercise can lower your weight and improve your health. Some changes should include:

  • Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you consume
  • Decrease unhealthy snack foods and sweetened drinks
  • Reduce portion size
  • Learn to read nutrition labels
  • Learn healthier ways to prepare your favorite foods

The Regenerative Medicine Center specializes in treating obesity and many other diseases with hormone optimization. By balancing your hormones, you will be able to more easily lose weight once you make some lifestyle and nutrition changes.
