At The Regenerative Medicine Center, we utilize a variety of cutting-edge diagnostic equipment to help us determine the source of your symptoms and ensure an accurate diagnosis. Our specialized equipment allows us to perform tests including bone density and body composition analysis. If you think you may have osteoporosis or you want more information about your body fat and weight distribution to help identify the best weight loss method for you, you may want to consider a bone densitometry test or body composition analysis.
The bone densitometry testis a test that aids doctors in the diagnosis of osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak to the point of breaking. This weakening may be due to aging, or caused by other factors that combine with age.
The bone densitometry test compares your bone to that of a young adult at peak bone strength (T-score). Your T-score combined with other risk factors, will enable your doctor to estimate what your risk of a hip fracture or other major osteoporosis-related fracture will be in the next 10 years. This information will help your doctor determine what course of action should be taken. The bone densitometry test is also useful in following bone changes. Your doctor may suggest follow-up tests to detect change over time.
Even though x-rays are used, the amount absorbed by the patient is only about 1/10th of that received from a chestx-ray. The x-ray dose from the bone densitometry test is comparable to the naturally occurring radiation you are exposed to in one week.
A bone densitometer measures bone mineral density(BMD). The amount of bone mineral relates directly to bone density. The bone densitometer uses small amounts of x-ray to measure BMD and to produce images of the spine, hip, or even the whole body. The technical term for the method is "dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry", or DXA.
Bio-impedance body composition analysis (BIA) measures body composition, such as your body mass index (BMI), electronically. It is the clinical assessment of tissue and fluid compartments in the human body. A normal distribution of tissue and fluid in the body is associated with immunity, high function, and longevity. An abnormal distribution of tissue and fluid in the body is associated with susceptibility, low function, and the effects of disease and aging. Our body is bioelectric and the Body bioimpedance analysis measures our vitality at a cellular level.
With the use of the BIA to monitor key indicators of health and fitness, healthcare practitioners can develop, monitor and manage diet, nutrition and exercise programs that lead to improved overall physical condition.
